The Thesaurus

Using the thesaurus is not just to find more synonyms and antonyms. You also find near-synonyms and related words. Imagine trying to figure all of this out for yourself...well that is impossible. No wonder the original meaning for thesaurus is "treasury".

"But my dictionary does that too" you might think," So what's the point of a thesaurus?". One main differece between the two is: Dictionary defines a word whereas a thesaurus does not. The latter brainstorms laterally more words related to the search item. This is particularly useful when you need to look up for technical jargons.

Let me remind you since this website is devoted to Bahasa Malaysia, I have to begin with the thesaurus produced by Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka, whether you like it or not. sigh we have to stick to the rules...

Thesaurus DBP series

1990 - The publication of Tesaurus Umum Bahasa Melayu, a combined project of DBP and Universiti Sains Malaysia.

1995 - Tesaurus Linguistik

1998 - Tesaurus Bahasa Melayu Dewan

2005 - Tesaurus Melayu Dewan. It contains 5,400 main entries and 18, 000 sub-entries. Sub-entry in this context are root words that are added to affixes.

Looking for free Thesaurus in Bahasa Malaysia online? Well DBP provides the oldest thesaurus in its series free on its official website. You would have to check it out for yourself on your prefer search engines. Wan had tried to include DBP links on this website twice for the convenience of visitors but twice their darn website was out for service for days and I ended up with broken links which is detrimental to my site.
