Simple Linguistic Facts

The functions of "untuk" and "demi" which confuse most of us are:

  • untuk = for ( give to, send to )
    = use for
    = for ( in order to )
    demi= for (because )
    = for the sake of
  • When untuk = for ( in order to )
    demi = for the sake of

    Both share the same function of expressing a purpose.

An example,

ondeh ondeh

  • Untuk memikat hati pelanggan, dia menghasilkan ketayap yang paling enak.
    In order to attract customers, he produces the tastiest ketayap.
  • Demi memikat hati pelanggan, dia menghasilkan ketayap yang paling enak.
    For the sake of attracting customers, he produces the tastiest ketayap.

In this case, both "untuk" and "demi" fit the context of the sentences. As the first example at the beginning of the page, both answers are correct.

It is important to assess the context of the sentence before choosing between "untuk" and "demi".
