Penjodoh Bilangan in Pictures
"What is penjodoh bilangan...? "
It's better to give examples. When I say: a grain of rice, a mouthful of rice and a bowl of rice...you can see the increase in quantity of rice.
Literally, penjodoh is " the one who matches" and bilangan, "quantity". Therefore Wan defines it as a word that matches the quantity of the subject. In this case, it is rice. However, it does not always have an exact English equivalent.
To illustrate: an earstud is sebentuk subang, a pair of earstuds is sepasang subang.
A Burden for Children
" Saya hanya dapat makan se_____ limau kerana terlalu masam."
This is a sample of homework given to even very young children. So I really can't blame a kid giving me for an answer " sebiji" instead of " seulas" because I have a cousin who consistently eats one whole orange no matter how sour - since she's a little girl. Besides most kids instinctively opt for an orange instead of just...a pip.
Wouldn't it be helpful to have a picture of a boy puckering his mouth and nose, holding a half eaten orange pip? Better still...another happy boy beside him putting an orange into his mouth.
Then there are schools giving children 20-50 items on penjodoh bilangan to study for tests. I feel sorry for those children. It's so boring to study just ... a list. We adults don't enjoying studying lists so why make children do it?
My Approach
Unable to find suitable illustrations from the market, I made a collection of penjodoh bilangan in pictures. Among them, a creation I named " Si Botak" is my favourite. He has helped many children to rejoice in learning and I hope he can do the same for you. :)

 | Si Botak menuang secawan kopi. Si Botak pours a cup of coffee. | ____________________________________________________________
| Dia minum seteguk kopi. He takes a sip of coffee. | | ________________________________________________________________
 | Ibu menghidangkan sebuku roti, sebiji kek dan sesikat pisang sebagai sarapan. Si Botak memasukkan sesudu gula ke dalam kopinya. Mom serves a loaf of bread, a cake and a comb of bananas for breakfast. Si Botak adds a spoon of sugar into his coffee. | _________________________________________________________________
| "Hmm...tak cukup manis. Biar aku tambah seketul gula lagi." ( Eh, Si Botak nanti kencing manislah! )" Hmm not sweet enough. Let me add another cube of sugar." ( Eh , Si Botak , you will get diabetes later. ) | | _________________________________________________________________
 | Dia makan sepotong kek, sebiji pisang dan sekeping roti yang disapu dengan kaya. He eats a piece of cake, a banana and a piece of bread spread with kaya ( a sweet yummiest bread spread made from coconut milk and eggs ) | ________________________________________________________________
| Ah...kopi dah habis, tinggal setitik sahaja. Ah...coffee is finished, only left a drop. | | _________________________________________________________________
 | Si Botak mencungkil sebatang giginya dengan sebatang pencungkil kayu. Si Botak cleans one of his tooth with a toothpick. | _________________________________________________________________
| Dia memakai sepasang sarung kaki. Eh, kenapa saya nampak sebuah kasut sahaja? He wears a pair of socks. Hey, why do I see only one shoe? | | __________________________________________________________________
 | Ah...dia memakai sepasang kasut dan membawa sebuah beg. Jom! Kita ikutnya ke sekolah.Ah...now he puts on a pair of shoes and brings a bag. Come! we follow him to school. | _________________________________________________________________
| Semasa berjalan ke sekolah, Si Botak ternampak seekor anjing yang menggonggong seketul tulang. On the way to school, Si Botak saw a dog carrying a bone. | | _________________________________________________________________
 | Nakal Si Botak! Dia membaling anjing itu dengan seketul batu. Si Botak is so naughty! He pelts the dog with a stone. |
________________________________________________________________
What will happen to Si Botak? Now we have to follow him and THE DOG in then next link - Belajar Penjodoh Bilangan dengan Si Botak because the page is getting too long. :)
