Names of Flowers Related to Things
There are many names of flowers in Bahasa Malaysia that mean "things"
The texture of bunga kertas suits its name – paper. One of my cherished childhood memories is admiring the luxuriant growth of puang tawang on my next door neighbour’s fence. Puang seems to be the old spelling for puan, a kind of artificial flower and tawang means gold chain. That explains why I am so attracted to the “gold-chain flower”. As for the flower known as duranta in Malaysia, I prefer its Indonesian name – penitian because its tiny flower is indeed the size of a pin.
