Malaysiakini
Malaysiakini stunned me from day one. Where else in Malaysia can you read about the cost of security system in Pak Lah's residence? It is an impressive job to dig out that 20 million Ringgit.
For me, reading about politics is not fun if you get only ONE side of the story...no wonder I have been yawning at the Malaysian political columns all these years until I meet Malaysiakini, ha ha ha!
3 Languages!
This is my favourite feature. If you are still not fluent in Bahasa Malaysia, you can refer to either the English or simplified Chinese version. Please take note that the priority of the news items are different in the three languages. The Bahasa Malaysia version, highlights, of course, issues of interest ( or shocking ) to the Malay community. This applies also to the letters column.
Oh, Those Letters
This is the liveliest discussion I have ever seen. I am touched by one letter describing tears of a 12 year old squatter boy named Shariman as the authorities bulldozed his shelter for the second time. I am glad that someone is caring enough to voice his distress. Do you think the big guys up there are bothered about where he sleeps after that?
On the other hand, I blush a little at a letter from the President of the Consumers Association of Penang as he discusses the media frenzy over the lavish wedding of a celebrity couple because I am a great fan of the bride and gladly devour every detail of the wedding. I ended up nodding meekly to his preaching of modesty.
I notice glaring grammatical and typing mistakes in some letters. However I am willing to put up with them. Be reasonable, there is always a price to the freedom of speech! Besides...you can read the letters in full for free but you have to pay to subscribe to the news and archive in full.
Cartoon
When you are tired of reading, I would recommend you scroll down to the cartoon section of MalaysiaKini called Cartoonkini. I am almost floored by one that gives a satiric definition to the word "Merdeka".
My Little Voice
I hope I won't get scolded for recommending Malaysiakini as I do agree with it's slogan to voice VIEWS THAT MATTER. I know Shariman would agree...
P.S. Malaysia Kini means Malaysia Today in English. Incidentally, there is another opposition website ( not newspaper) also called Malaysia Today.
