Malaysia Vacation for Nature Lovers

Planning a Day's Excursion to Tenom

Bahasa Malaysia Vacation Guide - Learn how to express future actions.

When I tell my honourable mother that I shall drive my little kancil from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom, she shakes her head and says an old junk like my kancil will suffer a breakdown half way.

Mom makes me agree to have my honourable father drive us in a 4-wheel pick-up. What both my parents forget to tell me - as usual - is that Mom will visit her client in Keningau and Dad will buy some fresh game meat.

There are two routes to Tenom, one via Papar and the other via Moyog. The former runs along the only and pitiable railway in Borneo and is shorter, but Dad opts for the longer 3 hour route via Moyog. He says the road condition is better. Bad roads here tend to bump a long way till your butt hurts.

On the big day before seven in the morning, right after Dad revs up the pick up engine, it starts to rain heavily. We stop by at an eating place before Keningau where the mountains are cool. I don't dare to eat as I get car sick easily. My folks order coffee but after few sips, they decide to give up on the coffee which doesn't taste like coffee. We eat our only decent meal for that day brunching at the only decent shop in Keningau. Only after the meal, Mom announces that she will visit her client.

malaysian fruit

Mom's client is a lady who runs a plant nursery. Her eyes twinkle when she finds out that I shall visit the Tenom Agricultural Park. She plucks a fruit and asks me to chew it. After I spit out the seed, she plucks a limau kasturi and asks me to eat it on the spot.

" The lime will taste sweet because you have just eaten the 'magic fruit'. " She assures me.

Sure enough the limau kasturi is as sweet as orange. I eat a second lime, and it is still as sweet as ever. Mom is so impressed she buys a seedling of the 'magic fruit' for RM15. Can you imagine what happens if you take this bright red fruit and then take your bitter medicine? Ah, the medicine will be sweet.

Bahasa Malaysia Vacation Guide 2 - Akan means "will or shall". For example:
I shall go to Tenom Agricultural Park
Saya akan pergi ke Taman Pertanian Tenom.

This visit takes much time. We arrive in the Tenom Agricultural Park at 2pm as I look above, dark clouds are looming. The one hour in the park is like a few minutes. My eyes are too busy feasting on myriads of strange beautiful tropical flowers and hands clicking the digital camera. Then the darn rain starts pouring and we have to leave. Next time, I know better. I should go alone and stay at least a night in Tenom to tour the Park more completely.

babi hutan, wild boar

We stop by at stalls along the way because Dad is looking forward to his game meat. The stalls are very bloody places, swarming with flies. The vendors even have barbecue stands where they sell roasted meat. The displayed meat samples are not meant for the faint hearted. Dad doesn't like the wild boar and roasted meat. A vendor offers him payau for RM21 a kilo, Dad likes it and buys 2 kilos. Then the vendor takes out a chunk of wild goat leg. Dad likes it too and buys a kilo. By then, Mom is itching to pull the vendor's leg.

" Do you have monkey meat as well?" she asks cheekily.

Fortunately the answer is no. Honestly, we shall not eat the monkey meat. The next day, Dad fries some payau meat for me. My! It's heavenly. At least it makes up for my disappointment of not being able to see all of Tenom Agricultural Park. Oh yes, I shall return for my next malaysia vacation.

Bahasa Malaysia Vacation Guide 3 - Exercise. Think of these sentences in Bahasa Malaysia before you look at the answers:

Hopefully you pass all the exercises so that you can take better care of yourself when you are in Malaysia for vacation.
