Kata Ganda B. Malaysia

Ulam-ulamAN

Fresh salad from the garden in the Malay Archipelago including Malaysia ulam-ulamAN , usually served with ikan bilis sauce, geragau shrimp sauce or sambal.

City folks like Wan only get to see devolved ulam-ulamAN in Malay eateries. ( The only decent ulam-ulamAN I can find is at the KK Central Market Malay food stall, I think it's Sri Kepayan ) The usual stuff they have are cucumbers, angled beans, ladies fingers, long beans with sambal belacan.

I am sure the ulam in West Malaysia is more interesting than Sabah. At least they have cabbages and ...ulam raja leaves, not to be confused with ulam. Ulam raja is a flowering plant like this...

ulam raja

ulam

Ulam-ulamAN: Ulam raja dan daun pegaga dimakan dengan sambal pedas berapi.

There are about 120 types of plants to choose from to assemble the traditional ulam-ulam : aring-aring, beluntas, cekur, daun cenohom, daun kemangi, daun pudina ( mint ), gelang pasir, kantan, kangkung, kunyit muda, lengkuas, maman, mengkudu, pegaga, peria ( bitter gourd ), pegaga, petai, pucuk betik, pucuk gajus, silom, eggplant etc... I want to talk about this ulam ingredient

jering, jengkol

The smelly jering!

Stingy people are called "tangkai kering" which rhymes well with "tangkai jering". The latter is a more popular simpulan bahasa for a miser.

Here's a question: Why only men like ulam-ulam?

jering, jengkol

Ulam-ulam: perempuan simpanan
