A Malaysia Island Called Humped Cattle

Pulau is Bahasa Malaysia island, whereas Sapi, zebu.About 20 minutes breezy boat ride from Kota Kinabalu lies a sun-kissed little island called Pulau Sapi.

And people have been calling Pulau Sapi - " Cow Island".

If we observe carefully, cow/lembu looks like this:

Zebu/humped cattle/sapi looks like this:

" Hey, do you see my humped shoulder and a flap of skin that hangs beneath my lower jaw like a turkey?"

Folks who called this island "Sapi" might have thought the hills protruding on the island resemble humps of sapis. These days we don't have space for sapis on the island. Rich tourists have taken up most of the space for their exquisite tents, elegant picnic tables covered with spotless tablecloths and chairs. Folks who have to budget their expenditure like Wan and her gang on Sapi, consider it fortunate to share a space under the tree with ants.

A colony of monkeys used to terrorize the island, harassing visitors and snatching human food. So the National Park authorities took them to another location. Other monkeys which protest the relocation, swam to the opposite island presumably during a low tide.

Then a group of monitor lizards took over and become sort of public pets. They hang around the cooking place when the cafeteria staff are preparing BBQ feast for those rich tourists who need a makan space for four when there are just two of them. The staff give these lizards tidbits, then the visitors also contribute more tidbits, followed by photo sessions with the lizards.

Well, that's our Sapi Island which has become Biawak island. If these monitor lizards were not under protection of the national park, they would have tasted good in herbal soups.

I have made an audio e-pamphlet based on a visit to Sapi which discusses some common Bahasa Malaysia conjunctions.
