Abang ipar Older brother-in-law

Kakak berkahwin dengan abang ipar saya selama dua tahun.
Sister has been married to my brother-in-law for two years.


Abang kandung Kandung is the womb, the older brother who shares the same womb is one's fleshly brother.

Ibu melahirkan Amin dan abang kandungnya.
Mother gives birth to Amin and his own brother.


Abang tiri Step brother.

Anak lelaki isteri baru ayah menjadi abang tiri kami.
The son of dad's new wife becomes our step brother.


Abu Jahal A Quraysh who opposes the Prophet Mohammad. A wicked person.

Sepupu Abu Jahal kamulah menuduh saya mencuri kamus simpulan bahasanya.
It is your bad cousin accusing me of stealing his Malay idiom dictionary.


Abu Lahab An uncle of the Prophet Muhammad who opposes Islam. Same meaning as Abu Jahal, a wicked person.


Abu Nawas An Arabic poet renowned for writing things prohibited by Islam. A person who is fond of trickery.

Orang kampung tidak mempercayai pekedai yang dikenali sebagai Abu Nawas itu.
The villagers do not trust that shop owner who is well known for his trickery.


Abui mata From the root word Abu. To scatter dust onto one's eyes is to trick in a slick way.

Seorang penipu berjaya mengabui mata banyak mangsa.
A cheat succeeded in victimizing many slickly.


Aci-acian Suppose, it's only a thought not reality.

Dia sudah mempunyai aci-acian untuk membeli kamus simpulan bahasa dengan wang yang belum diterimanya.

Ada-ada To have something going on.

Ada-ada sahaja yang disembangkan apabila beberapa orang wanita duduk bersama.There is always something to chat about when a few women sit together.


Ada angin There's the (unpredictable) wind ( in a person's head ), referring to a person's mood swings.

Susah kami melayan pelanggan yang ada angin.

Ada gaya Gaya is one's style of displaying ability.

Pereka kasut ini ada gaya yang tersendiri.
This shoe designer has his own style.


Ada hajat Have intention.

Muthu yang bakal menduduki peperiksaan ada hajat membeli sebuah kamus simpulan bahasa.

Ada harapan Same as ada can.


Ada hati Same as ada hajat.


Ada jalan To have a way of solving a problem.

Biasanya ketua kampung ada jalan menyelesaikan pertikaian.

Ada rezeki To have the fortune that a person wants.

Zulkarnain ada rezeki rumahnya sendiri setelah bertahun-tahun bekerja keras.

Ada riak If you see ripples in a pond, there's a sign of fish. Body language can be the sign of what a person is thinking within his heart.

Adat lembaga Lembaga is a mold. The tradition that is molded by ancestors and passed down from generation to generation.

Adik tiri Younger step brother/sister.

Setelah bapanya berkahwin lagi and melahirkan anak dengan isteri kedua, Saiful mendapat seorang adik tiri.
After his dad remarries and have a child with the second wife, Saiful gains a step brother.


Adu buku Buku is the joint of the fingers, fold them together you get the fists. So when the fists are incited against each other and we have a boxing match or...fight.

Mata pemuda itu lebam akibat beradu buku dengan rakannya.
That young man got a black eye from boxing with his pal.


Adu domba Domba here is NOT sheep. It's a compound word that means to incite two parties against each other.

Ahli politik itu mengadu dombakan kedua-dua puak itu demi kepentingannya sendiri.
That politician incites two ethnic groups to fight against each other for his own gain.


Adu kening When the eyebrows of at least two people meet, that's the English equivalent of face to face.

Seorang calon yang ditemu duga biasanya duduk beradu kening dengan bakal majikannya.
A candidate on a job interview usually sits facing his future boss.


Adu lengan Arm-wrestling

Kaum lelaki gemar beradu lengan.
Men like arm-wrestling


Adu mata Same meaning as adu kening.


Adu nasib To seek one's fortune.

Banyak kaum muda kampung pergi mengadu nasib di kota.
Many rural youths go to the city to seek their fortune


Adu untung Same as adu nasib


Ahli nujum Astrologer.

Kelihatan lukisan tiga orang ahli nujum pada kad Hari Natal.
One can see picture of the three astrologers on the Christmas card.


Ahli sihir Wizard.

Ahli sihir menyumpah putera raja menjadi seekor katak.
The wizard casts a spell on the prince and turns him into a frog.
