Malay Dictionary SoftwareOverpriced and Lousy Service
Folks serious about learning Malay have to buy kamus. I bought five plus a Malay dictionary software.
There are basically two choices:
1.On one hand we have this brand that sells its products separately i.e. English Malay dictionary for RM99, spell checker RM180, a great combination of spell checker, thesaurus, the latest Kamus Dewan, kamus simpulan bahasa and a set of English encyclopedia for RM250. I have listed them on Malaysian Dictionary
2. On the other hand, we have the ekamus by a company called Alaf Teras -package of spell checker, Kamus Dewan 3rd edition plus English Malay dictionary priced at RM90* for buyers in Malaysia. *RM250 for buyers outside of Malaysia.
A rakyat biasa like Wan who has to watch her budget can only afford to choose ekamus. After using ekamus for almost 2 years, I found errors in two entries. There is not iron clad risk free guarantee and I think there is a workable trial version.
Apart from the peculiar quality and the spammy nature ekamus is being marketed, this Malay dictionary software had served me well whenever my workload was heavy. I like the combination of different English Malay and Malay English dictionary to clarify the ambiguity of Kamus Dewan with minimum hassle.
Ekamus has a feature that can help folks, especially non-Malaysians who wonder "how to learn Bahasa Malaysia" effectively. You can command ekamus to display meanings of Malay words in websites and word documents by pointing with the mouse. Actually ekamus is designed to help Malay speakers learn English but this feature is definitely very very helpful for self-motivated new learners.
However, there is one little problem. E-kamus can only be used ONCE. My computer had to be reformatted and after that I cannot install it again. I contacted the E-kamus people but they "tidak layan". On the other hand, I bought Collins English dictionary with comes with a CD for RM50, no problem with installing it over and over again.
Most folks prefer a free kamus online. All I can say is...good luck. You knowlah a lot of online services with the tag "Malaysia" tends to flip-flop a lot.
