I would say that , "ketika" is not a tense, but rather, a subordinating conjunction as it links one sentence to another. Furthermore, there are no tenses in BM. To denote a future action, we add adverb clauses of time such as "esok", "nanti", "karang" and so on.
As a native speaker, I personally believe for most parts, BM has no equivalence to any other language; below is such a case.
"My first exposure to BM was when I was 15"
I would say:
a)"pada umur 15 tahun, saya/aku mula belajar BM" b)"minatku pada BM bermula pada umur 15 tahun." c)"pertama kali aku belajar BM, aku berumur 15 tahun"
If your BM is good enough, you can see that I use "learnt"(a) (c), "interest"(b).
It is understood that you have started at that age. I guess this is one of the reasons why I find English enjoyable and unique: for one thing, there are so many ways of describing and telling. Of course, this may very well apply to every languages in the world, however despite the similar characteristics, there may be no way of connecting them into making sense
So, in short, just use the closest to the meaning as u can and to not worry so much about whether its a tense or which word to use.
Hope I made some sense :)

Re: Is "Ketika" Past Tense? by: Lydia
Hi, Raashid Kola
As far as i know , bahasa Malaysia has no specific words refer to past tense. However, adverb like 'sudah' or even terms like 'dahulu' do reveal the time frame.
I'm not sure of 'kapan'and 'ketika'. But in both Malaysia and Indonesia dictionary, they are only simply refer to 'when,' refer to time and etc. I think it is understood that something has happened some time ago. Or that's also the lack of information in Malaysia's dictionary...
Wan's reply: But I have come across at least one multiple choice question in an UPSR reference that specifically asks for the difference between ketika, apabila and semasa. It was a very quick reading and it wasn't my book. I would appreciate if someone can dig out the title of that book for me.
